Royal Ascot Ball

Monday 5th May

Another glorious day at sea, with very little to write about except my enjoyment of the slow pace of life and being looked after by other people!

That evening was the Royal Ascot Ball. The balls on this ship have been well-attended and very crowded. I wanted a good position in order to video Dan and Olena, the international dance couple. I therefore set off for the ballroom at 8:30. There were still people there from the cocktail party (which I’d chosen not to attend) but as soon as a space was clear I stood front and centre, right where I wanted my chair to be. When the time seemed appropriate I pulled across my own chair and sat down in it. A couple of other people saw what I was doing and copied it. We made up the whole front row. It was fun, and also I ended up meeting some new people over it. One person had asked a wine waiter to move a table for her. He did in the end but explained that it was meant to be done by the people who were trained to do it. I wonder if the training is in how to drag chairs or where to place them correctly? Eventually it was all set up, and they even agreed to give me a third chair in my two-seater position, as three of us usually sit together. (At the next ball they did not seem happy to do this, so I moved a seat myself after they had gone. Their lovely positioning does not last long once people start arriving. No one wants chairs with their back to the ballroom, so these are always moved.)

At around 10.15 the traditional hat parade took place. This event was enlivened by a little tot who took to parading immediately and set off around the floor. Her mother thought she might last once around the floor but she kept going and going, trying to overtake those in her path.
